About Bree and the Baby

David called today. He and Bree went to the hospital this a.m. Sad to say, they lost the baby. Bree was just three months along. David said, though she was shocked to find out that she was pregnant, she had bcome quite happy about it. Now she is feeling very sad. I know how I felt when that happened to me. After a doctor confirms the preganancy, you begin to plan for the future with a new child included. Then, when it suddenly ends, you are sad. There is a time of mourning. The baby would have been born in April. (With Bree's history of coming two weeks early, it would, likely have been born in March.)

Toast

Myrna Trauntvein wrote:

One of the first snacks suggested by Snack-Girl was toast. It is simple, versatile, and if you choose right, a healthy choice.

How do you find healthy bread? The rules for finding healthy bread are almost the same as cereal.

1. Is the first ingredient WHOLE grain? If it isn't then put it back on the shelf. Do not be fooled by the ingredient "wheat flour". The whole grain means that most of the nutrients remain from the grain remain in the bread. Without it, you might as well eat Wonder Bread (which is wonderful but not nutritious).

2. Does it have at least 3 grams of fiber per serving? Eating foods that are high in fiber will help keep you feeling fuller for longer. Bread is an excellent source of fiber if it is made with whole grains.

Here are two brands of bread that Lisa (aka Snack Girl) found that passed the test: "The Arnold bread was in the bread aisle and cost me $2.99 for the loaf. It was on sale from $3.99."

"The Alvarado Street Bakery bread was in the 'Natural Foods' section and cost me $2.89 because I had a coupon. (I LOVE coupons!!) The Alvarado bread usually costs $3.49 a loaf. It is a sprouted bread which is fantastic from a nutritional perspective."

Myrna wrote: I looked and our usual stores and they do not carry Arnold. Is that a regional brand or where could I find it?

I have been buying Aspen, Utah made, that is whole grain whole wheat. It is a low-glycemic bread that is high in fiber and has just a little honey. I don't know where to look for some things. They have a neat grocery store, called Sprouts, on the Orem hill that even has facilities for grinding your own almond butter. It seems like a good spot to buy foods that fit my new diet. I didn't check there last week for bread because I bought the Aspen brand at Costco. They have it at Sams, the health food store (for a buck more) and at WalMart.

Oh, oh. The Aspen bread I bought I am not supposed to eat. The sugar grams are high. Now my quest for Arnold is really on. I am trying to find a bread without added sugar. Yes, I have learned, they do exist.

Melanie wrote: I am a bread bigot. I only buy the Arnold bread. I also have tried a few of the other whole grain breads, and Arnold's holds up better for sack lunches.

We used to buy Arnold bread in Massachusetts, so I thought they were a chain. They are marketed by orowheat. Sprouts is good, but can be expensive. Be careful. Sometimes you can find the same kinds of foods for better prices, in the area stores. I buy almond butter in the organic section of Kroger, it is cheaper than Sprouts.

Good luck.

Myrna wrote:
I cannot get it here nor at WalMart. I tried Albertson's and Macey's but I did not try Smith's. Is Kroger the same as Smith?

Melanie: Yes

Popped Wheat

You can pop wheat kernels but the result is not like popcorn.

Place a layer in a preheated iron skillet (sometimes we oil or spray the pan and sometimes we use the pan dry). Heat the skillet and stir it until the popping sound stops. They are more like nuts than popcorn. The hard shell cracks and it is crunchy

We like to salt them while they are hot. Lots of times, we will do a half gallon at a time and store it in a canning jar for treats for later.

Grandma Smith Knew How to Keep a Baby Kitty Alive

This is the type of formula that Grandma Smith would use. She usually, and always that I knew of, was successful in getting another nursing mother cat to adopt the baby by putting butter on the baby's nose and putting it with the others. She said that keeping a baby cat alive was a lot of work and was not as successful as getting a kitten adopted was.

Formula #4
1 can Evaporated Milk
1 egg yolk
2 tablespoons Karo syrup
All three mixed well and kept in tightly sealed jar in fridge. At feeding time mix 1/2 of the estimated feeding amount with: Equal amount of boiling water (once a day mix 1 drop of human infant liquid vitamins in each kitties' formula)

If constipation occurs: add 1 drop of vegetable oil to each kitties formula no more than once daily till problem is eased. Test temperature before feeding (the combination of boiling water and chilled formula should be just about right)

In a pinch (emergency), the Cornell University's Veterinary School's Book of Cats says that human baby formula can be used if made up to double the normal strength (human baby formula is not nutritious enough for kittens). As with the below formulas, please remember that any emergency formula should only be used until regular Feline Replacement Formula (such as KMR or Just Born) can be purchased at the pet store. None of these are nutritionally complete for the long term health of a kitten.

[note: if you cannot find "Karo syrup" (a very sweet corn syrup) you can substitute a very sweet sugar-syrup: 1 c. sugar + 1/4 c. hot water.  Heat, stirring, until sugar dissolves.]

Colleen Manti

Hello Dear Friend,

I didn't know you had a diabetes problem. I am happy to hear you have it under
control with diet.  Keep yourself healthy.

Love you,
Colleen

p.s.  We had the St. George Mission---Missionaries, and about 15 Primary
General Board Members Thursday morning.  We had ll0 in the l0:30 a.m.
Session.  Our ll:30 a.m. session was a full session too.  It certainly brought
a wonderful spirit to the temple that day.

Melanie: I am thinking, "AWESOME!" Look how flat the lower rock formations are. Amazing. Mel

Kimberly: I couldn't do that.  I like the pics, but heights make me dizzy. Kimberly

Myrna: They don't just make me dizzy, they make me sick. I got nauseated and had even more sweaty palms just looking at them. Even Dad, who doesn't mind heights, said he did not ever want to go there. Photos were enough for us!

Todd: It's on my bucket list.

Ancient Writings

Was Jesus Married? I don’t know the answer. However, whatever He did was the way it should have been done. If we needed to know the answer, we would already know. I hope that someday I overcome all of my faults, and through repentance, will be worthy enough to be where He is. If that ever happens, I will find the answer to that question. Until that hoped for reunion, I will just try to become what I need to become, and be what He wants me to be. However, as I approach my eighty second birthday I realize how short my time left here is. I am not sure there is enough time left for me to get that done. I am a very slow learner. Therefore, when we get to the other side, please come down and visit me from time to time. Lots of love, Gordon The topic that might be of interest: The entire article that discusses the discovery of a new text fragment can be found at the Smithsonian and the Smithsonian Channel will premiere a special documentary about the discovery on September 30 at 8 p.m. ET. Top religion scholar, Karen King, just unveiled the discovery of a 1600-year-old Coptic text fragment that suggests that at least some early followers of Christ believed he was married. Myrna wrote: I am just fascinated with ancient writings. More so because Joseph Smith put up with so much from his critics and the church has put up with so much through the years. It seems to me that more and more ancient texts are uncovered and none of them are well-preserved as were the plates. Therefore, it is a little joy to me to know that Heavenly Father saved the record of the Nephites to teach us in our day and did it so well that they were not destroyed by time. Even some of the ancient metal plates discovered in other places have been ravaged by time. Ours were on gold for a reason. Isn't it a marvel? In addition, Joseph Smith was assisted so that he gave the proper translation to the ancient text every time. That is even more of a testimony builder to me. Translators work and work to come up with what they think are reasonable translations and they make errors. They do not have heavenly assistance and did Joseph. You are 81 and I am 71. I have the same thoughts about time rushing past and it being my time to go home. I have no need to come "down" to visit you. First of all, you will be in the "land of light" and of peace and joy and second of all, I am concerned about where I might be. As long as it is not "outer darkness," I will be happy. Can you imagine a fate worse?

I'm Here (Benjamin)

I arrived in Fresno!! All is well, we already went out and did some contacting, we got seven referrals! It was an amazing experience. I don't have much time, I'll write more on Monday. I love you so much, it was lovely talking to you! This is where I'm supposed to be, and I know it! :)

Love you,
Elder Bolton

David and Bree will be parents again!

David said he was posting this on Facebook so I gave him enough time to get it there since none of you will read this until morning. Isn't it neat? Gramps and I get to be grandparents one more time! That will be 34 for us. The baby will be born at the end of April if all goes well and we will all be praying that it does.

Diabetes Class

Hi Myrna,
We have a class scheduled this week on Thurs. 9/20 at 6 pm. Topic - problem solving/goal setting.
Thanks,
Landon
Pharmacist Intern, Santaquin Pharmacy and Diabetes Center

I won't be with you on that date. I have another engagement. My daily blood testing shows that I am leveling out at 95-96. I don't know if that is good enough. There are certainly lots of good healthy foods to eat that taste really good. I don't miss sugar nor sweeteners. I have learned that I really like walking. I walk everywhere that I can. I am down 17 pounds. It is going more slowly now but I am losing about a pound a week. My goal is 125 (32 pounds less than where I started).

From: Landon.Hatfield@pharm.utah.edu
Wow, sounds like you are doing great! Thanks for the reply. I'm assuming the 95-96 is a fasting blood glucose reading, that's great! It sounds like you are doing exactly what you set out to do, manage your diabetes with diet and exercise! Keep up the good work. We'll be in touch.

Open Letter to Denise Patnode

Dear Ms. Patnode:

I was truly shaken when I heard that you were fighting cancer for a second time. However, knowing you, you will take it with the same determination that you showed when you came to the "Old" Juab Middle School with a principal that had a strong commitment to outdoor education.

When I say strong determination, I recognized during our interview, that you had a great desire to do your best. This was because you were truly committed to being an outstanding teacher. Your love for students and the desire to help them achieve the expected objectives was impeccable.

I wish I could have had more opportunities to hike Nebo with the eighth grade. However, I continued to go up there with my scouts for a number of years. I was amazed at how you teachers taught our students out in the wild. I talked with John Bennion, now a BYU professor, who was also hired by me for the middle school staff. He still takes classes of his students into the mountains to hold a class because he, like you, found that to be invaluable.

In so many ways and for so many years you have taught students in our district to love learning. You have taught them to appreciate the gift of education. You have been a wise and caring teacher and have touched and changed many lives. You have always been willing to embrace change and to improve your teaching in every way possible. I commend you for that. After I left the middle school and went to the high school, I saw many students you had influenced for the better.

Thank you for your dedication to education. It makes me feel good to realize that I was wise in hiring you those years ago.

Know that you will be included in our prayers and that your name will be placed on the Manti Temple Prayer Roll immediately.

I know that Heavenly Father loves you and so does our Savior. When Apostle Bruce R. McConkie was diagnosed with cancer his close friend, a non-Mormon, asked if he had not wondered why me? Elder McConkie's reply was that, no he had not, but that he had wondered why not me?

You had the courage necessary to face down this disease once before. I admire that.

One of may favorite scriptures is Alma 7: 11-12. It tells of the Savior's love for us.

11 And he shall go forth, suffering pains and afflictions and temptations of every kind; and this that the word might be fulfilled which saith he will take upon him the pains and the sicknesses of his people.

12 And he will take upon him death, that he may loose the bands of death which bind his people; and he will take upon him their infirmities, that his bowels may be filled with mercy, according to the flesh, that he may know according to the flesh how to succor his people according to their infirmities.

Love,

Leonard and Myrna Trauntvein

Ground Game and GOP Strength (At least in Utah.) We can do this!‏

At my Republican central committe meeting on Saturday they begged us to dedicate three hours a week at a Romeny call center. It is super easy. We would just call people in the battleground states and ask if they are going to vote in the presidential election and then ask who they are voting for. We would enter that information in on the computer so the Romeny campaign can find out where they should focus their efforts. Apparently very few people are helping do this. If we go in one time, they can set it up so we can make the calls from home, too. If Obama is frightening now (and his attacks on religion scare me to death, and that isn't even talking about his unwillingness to spend within his means and violating the Constitution), wait until he is a lame duck president and not worried about polls or re-election. I hope freedom loving people will be motivated to vote. The socialists are out in full force and own the media outlets, so the people have to really work hard to overcome all of the propaganda. This is one small way. Brandon said people are so funny. They listen to the news and say I am not voting for the Republicans because I don't believe in 5-10% of what they say, so they vote for the Democrats whom they agree with 5-10% but disagree with 90-95%. Hopefully that will change with this election. Brandon is going to go sometime this week to the call center in Orem. They said that teenagers are having a lot of fun there and have competitions for the number of calls they make. Hopefully we can do something in our areas of influence. AnnMarie

About Mom's Success in Fighting Diabetes

Eric wrote: Great going and to top it all off you never got fired for your illness. Keep it up you make me happy, yes I'm choosing that.

Yum!

Melanie wrote: I actually do this with grape tomatoes, then toss them into pasta, with some chopped basil. Very tasty!

How to Make Slow Roasted Cherry Tomatoes from "Pretty Prudent"

All you need to do is wash your tomatoes then remove the stems, cut them in half, and lay them on a cookie sheet. Drizzle with olive oil and sprinkle with a bit of salt and pepper and toss to coat.

Chop some garden thyme and sprinkle on top. Add a few cloves of garlic, chopped and sprinkled on top.

Now set your oven to it’s lowest setting, somewhere around 225-250 for about 5 hours. They are done when you like the way they taste. Or let them go until they are all the way dry and call them sun-dried tomatoes and store them in a ziploc bag. Or pull them out when they are still slightly moist, but the edges are dried and they have a slightly chewy, sugary, deep, intense, amazing tomato flavor.

Spread them on french bread with cheese and a few fresh basil leaves or toss them on pasta with olive oil, or eat them on a bagel with cream cheese.

I think the same president may be reelected.

Do you think that Romney is going to lose? Dad and I went to the move, "2016, Obama's America," and we were scared to death. It seems that Obama is an anti-colonialist and he thinks that America is one of those countries that has "raped" other countries of their goods and made ourselves rich on the backs of those countries. He is also a communist. I was telling Julie about it and she was not certain that the documentary was not skewed. Of course, she voted for Obama last time because she and Jim thought that the Republican ticket was just "scary the last time around and we had no choice." At any rate, I have some concerns with Obama being able to become a dictator and stay in office forever: to hang with the constitution. I know that that is on his agenda or that, at least, he would like it to be. He would like us to have an economic collapse because it would level the playing field between us and the other countries that we have been wicked to such as China and the Arabian countries. He was also raised to be a communist by his grandparents and his mother. He is also Islamic. I am a bit concerned in light of revelations about the latter days and the constitution hanging as though by a thread. It looks to me as if Obama is going to win because most people do not know his religious affiliations any more than they know ours. They do not want a Mormon in office. I worry about that. I was reading that the Black ministers from the south are telling their folks to stay home and not vote either way. What is your opinion?

Hi

My name is Vivian Fivecoat and I am trying to put together a family genealogy book and I think we may be related albeit distance wise.  My grandparents on my maternal side were Earl George and Chasta Jean Stevenson.  They had a large family.  My mother Darlene Jean Stevenson was one daughter another was Betty Trauntvien who was married to a Mr. Trauntvien.  They had a son named Neldon Lee Trauntvien who married a woman named Linda.  They had three daughters that I know of Linda Lee, Bridgette and Yvette.

Can you / would you help me fill in the blanks?  My plans are one or two pages of history bio on each family member along with pictures and copies of birth marriage death certificates.

If we are related, can you / would you please send me any of the above documents (copies of course)  filling in any missing information.

I have a “tree” started on genealogy.com

Remember that we spell the surname with a Danish twist. It is Trauntvein (the Germans would have used a "w" rather than the "v" and, unlike English, it is "ei" to get the right sound.

I am your Facebook friend who suggested other family members for you and caused trouble. I am Myrna Trauntvein, wife of Leonard Trauntvein, cousin of Neldon. Eva Dixon, Helen Trauntvein and Don Trauntvein are Leonard's siblings. They are the children of Jens Henry Martin and Gladys Rostron Trauntvein. They had a baby brother, James, who died shortly after birth. In birth order they are: James, Eva, Helen, Don and Leonard. We have eight children: Shawn, Melanie, Todd, Eric, AnnMarie, Julie, Kirsten and David. All of them are married and we have 33 grandchildren. Neldon's father and my husband's father were brothers. Neldon's father was also Neldon (Uncle Ned). He was killed (Uncle Ned) when the mine caved in on him. Neldon, the son, was just a baby then.

From Vivian:

Yes I remember the story  from my childhood.  Young Neldon had a sister named Carol.  I am named after her.  I have a very long journey ahead of me…glad we connected.  Do you have any documents?  I will share whatever I find wherever  and whenever.  Don’t know if you are into this sort of thing or not right now something is pushing me to get this done.

Outstanding Experience at the Manti Temple Friday

Gramps and I had one outstanding experience at the temple Friday evening one week ago. Just outside Nephi on Thursday evening two men were killed in an airplane accident. Robert Marion Lamb, 45, a flight instructor from Woodland Hills, and Peter John Mrowiec, 58, an attorney from Ontario, Canada, died in the crash when their plane was forced from the air because of stormy weather. Of course, I had to cover it for the paper. That was Thursday. Friday evening on our shift, the night or evening shift, we received word that a young man, the son of Robert Lamb, was coming to the temple to receive his own endowments. We were told to be kind and thoughtful because it had not even been 24-hours since the father/husband of the family had died. Of course, when the mom and other family came to the temple they were still fairly upset.

I was at the initiatory desk, that was my assignment as one of the assistant coordinators of the shift, so I was able to hug them and welcome them to the temple. I was also able to encourage them. That was a personal blessing because you know how the spirit guides you and I felt His presence.

Usually, as you know, the temple president, in this case President Pinegar, meets just with the young man and his escort. However, in this case, he took the entire family into his office and taught them from the scriptures. He shared his experience in losing his young son in a tragic accident and blessed the family members. The young man also has a brother who is in the mission field in South America. This young man, I believe, was going to Spain. The women had 40 family members on that session and the men a like amount, give or take a few. Each of them did a Lamb family file card.

When the session was over, President Pinegar met with the family again just to see how they were. The young Elder said he had never had such a wonderful experience in his life. He told President Pinegar that his father’s spirit sat between him and his uncle, who was his escort, the entire session.

His mother had thought, that in light of what had happened, perhaps they should postpone the temple night they had planned. However, the Elder thought that his father would want them to continue with the plans they had made and would like his uncle to be his escort so they all had come.

President Pinegar received a thank you note from the family just this week.

I was so grateful that we have the priesthood in our church to, in the name of our Father and His Son, bless the lives of all. What a gift it is. What a blessing. If the Savior had been at the temple that night in person, He could not have done more than President Pinegar did through the gifts of the priesthood and acting in the name of the Savior. He would have comforted them and would have reviewed the Plan of Happiness with them as well. He would have blessed them and loved them. President Pinegar did all of that as a representative of Christ. How blessed we are. How thankful I am.

I am getting on top of the type 2 diabetes! I have lost 13 pounds and have my blood sugar down from 124 to 105. That is without medication--just diet. That is pretty good, I think. The big thing is that I feel SO much better. I might last a couple of more years.

Gramps and I love you. Keep up the good work. We will be thinking of you and praying for you each day. (More than once a day.)

Of course, she has a few years to wait. Rachel is still a little girl. She will have great experiences through Kyle and Matthew.

You are getting to see a lot of people that you know. How cool is that? Your ward friends must have all been worthy people and good friends to all be going on missions.

I am glad that you got to see President Monson's birthday party. He is such a great man. Heavenly Father certainly gives His prophets experiences that help shape them for the better. Of course, He picks special people to begin with.

I like those guys and their music. Todd wrote: I guess those autographed CDs and piano books are going to increase in value. Myrna wrote: Do you have one or two? Lucky you! Todd wrote: Multiples. Myrna wrote: Well, hold tight. I am certain that you are right and they will increase in value multiple times. Yay! I wonder if any of my old records that I have hidden under the stairs are worth anything. It would help if someone could play them, right? Todd wrote: There are plenty of record players still for sale. Myrna wrote: Where? Todd wrote: http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_1?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=Lp+player Also at many traditional stores like Target an Sprawl-Mart. Myrna wrote: Thanks. We'll have to look at Target on Thursday when we go there. I just thought they were never to be heard again. Sort of like the clock when the old man died.

About Missionary Letters

I can't wait to go on my mission with Brandon so I can have the experiences that Ben and Michael are having at the MTC.  They are such good examples to all of us.  Both of them have shared such powerful testimonies that I am excited for them to do so in the real world.  It is clear that it is Ben's time to go, and it is clear that Michael is well on his way to knocking on anyone's door in California.

I am so proud to be their Auntie.

Hey! From Michael

Hi everybody!

We had a few things happen this week that I'll tell you about.  First, I've seen Elder Ben Bolton a few times this week - we have the same lunch hour - and I saw his big brother Braden yesterday on my way to lunch!  It was pretty neat seeing them!  I also saw Elder Beenfield, who I served one of my mini missions with - he works as a security guard here now!  I wish I had gotten a picture, but I left my camera in the classroom that day.  So far that's all the people I've seen, but my best friend Cody Pickett is coming in this Wednesday, so I hope I'll be able to see him a few times before he ships out to Colorado Springs.  I'm way excited - It's almost like Christmas! Hahaha.

Again, thanks to everyone who has sent me packages.  Thanks, mom for the raincoats, etc., and thanks AnnMarie for the T-shirts, and thanks Rachel and Branden for the candy, and thanks Grandma and Grandpa Gordon for the donuts and cookies, and thanks Grandma and Grandpa Trauntvein for the card!  With all the food I've been getting, I'm becoming the favorite missionary in the district! Hahaha.  I practically had to fight off all the missionaries begging for donuts :P

We're doing fantastic out here.  We are now teaching two new investigators: Anderson and Enthony.  We've only taught them once each so far, so I don't know a whole lot about them.  They seem like pretty cool guys and they're a lot easier to teach than Abel! hahaha.  (Either that or we're just getting better at Spanish, which is possible).  We're getting to know each other better as a district, which is fantastic.  I love these guys so much.  The three Guatemalan Elders are leaving this week and we're all going to be sad to see them go.  They make up a decent third of our district and bring such a great spirit into the group.  BUT, we all know they'll be off to bigger and better things, so I guess it will all be ok.

Sorry I don't have any awesome stories or anything; all our time is taken up by Spanish study.  Not having any free time is difficult, but I know this program is inspired and that we'll make it through.  They say the days here are like weeks, but the weeks are like days.  That is so true!  I can't believe I've been here for two and a half weeks already!  It's weird to think that, had I been going to an English mission I would be shipping out in just a few days.  Oh!  I don't know if I told you, but my first Sunday here, they asked me to give a talk on Enduring to the End - all in Spanish!  I had only been here, like, three days and I was so scared I left the notebook I wrote the talk in in my classroom!  I didn't realize it, though until I was on the stand, ready to speak.  I had my Spanish Preach My Gospel and Book of Mormon and that was it.  I don't know how I did it, but I got up there and I just started talking.  It was some of the best Spanish I had ever spoken in my life.  I gave the whole talk I had written out and bore my testimony, only asking for help with a word once or twice.  I felt the Spirit so strong when I did so, and I knew that Heavenly Father was proud of me.  After Sacrament Meeting, I had missionaries that had been here seven and eight weeks telling me I gave a better talk than they could.  It made me feel so good inside that, even though I forgot my notebook, I had been obedient and the Lord had blessed me for it.

I know that this is the Lord's True Church.  I know that without a doubt.  In my short time here, I have grown closer to my Savior and Redeemer than I ever have before.  I know that He was there in the beginning with the Father, that by Him and through Him, the worlds are, and were created.  I know that He sent us here that we might learn and grow that we might progress eternally.  He came in the meridian of time, not to condemn the world, but that through Him, the world might be saved.  He took upon Himself our each and every sin and died that we might live.  As the Son of the Father, he could not be killed; He gave His own life voluntarily to finish the Work.  I know that His Gospel has been restored in these, the last days, and that it shall never again be taken from the Earth.  I know that as a missionary, I have been Called of God as His special witness and it is my duty to administer His Truth unto this people that they might come closer unto Christ.  I also know that He will return in the end to rule among the children of men, and in that day there shall be no more sorrow nor fear.  I know these things without a shadow of a doubt.  This is my work and my glory, to invite others to come unto Christ through faith in Him, repentance, baptism, the reception of the gift of the Holy Ghost, and enduring to the end.  I testify that these things are true and do so in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.

Well, I have to go.  God be with you till we meet again.

Love,
Elder Trauntvein

P.S.  Mom, yeah put my address and email on Facebook!  I can't write anyone any emails, but I can write them letters, so it's all good.  If I need anything, I'll let you know.

Amy G.: This week's installment.  The last paragraph made me totally cry...

Myrna wrote: Me too! It made me cry also. (I hope that card still had the money in it.)

Kirsten wrote: The second to last paragraph did it for me!  Love these Elders of ours! Love, Kirsten

Petty

Willism Pitty, born 1595 in Weymouth, Norfolk, Massachusetts married to Mary, is the futherest back we go.

This interesting name is of early medieval English and Scottish origin, and derives from the medieval Anglo-Norman French term "petit", small, a word of obscure and isolated origin, thought to be a "nursery word". It was used as a nickname for a small person, as in the recording of Walter le Petiit, in the Wiltshire Assize Rolls of 1249, and also to distinguish the younger of two bearers of the same given name. The term was also used as an element in medieval surnames developed from personal and occupational - or nick - names, as in Walter Petitclark (1304, Gloucestershire); John Petijohan (1327, Sussex); and John le Petit Smyth (1351, Essex). The surname from "petit" is first recorded in England in the late 12th Century, as below, and can be found in forms ranging from Petty and Pettie to Pe(t)it, Petyt, Pettitt and Pittet. In Scotland, one Fergus de Pety in the parish of Fyvy was excommunicated in 1382, and Master Duncan Petit or Petyt was archdeacon of Glasgow in 1395.

The marriage of John Petty and Margaret Rogers was recorded at St. Dunstan's in the East, London, on June 22nd 1568. A Coat of Arms granted to the Pettys of Warwickshire depicts, on a shield divided quarterly gold and blue, on a green bend three gold martlets. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of William Petie, which was dated 1198, in the "Feet of Fines of Nottinghamshire", during the reign of King Richard 1, known as "Richard The Lionheart", 1189 - 1199.

Surnames became necessary when governments introduced personal taxation. In England this was known as Poll Tax.

The Knight Family Crest

http://www.josephknightfamily.org/history/crest.html‏ There is a whole discourse on the Knight family crest and a photo of it at the site. I was interested in the following: WHERE DID THE KNIGHT CREST COME FROM?: The Knight family crest shown above was "adopted" by the family after an extensive search. It would be impossible to completely authenticate the actual coat used by our ancestors since for reasons given above, there are many versions found in the Heraldic Register in England. The large section of the New York Public Library on Heraldry has been consulted in order to survey the several registered there for old English families of the Knight surname. For the Knights who came to the New World during the early 1630Õs there are several found belonging to these families. The one found on the home page represents Knights who came from Hampshire, England where our ancestors originated. In the library of Bath, England the registry was consulted with the blazon (description) of this crest used to identify its origin between the 12th and 13th centuries. Therefore, according to time and place, this crest most fits the circumstances of our ancestors. Even, if this is not the case, the use of this emblem will help us keep the tradition of the origins of our family alive. We do not claim that this is the proven crest used by our ancestors, but it is typical of those used by these people and is representative of the traditional use of crests by the Knight family centuries ago.
