THOMAS SMITH & MATILDA HERITAGE
A number of our relatives left Oxfordshire in the 1870s for the London area and worked in shops. Others, like Matilda Heritage’s sisters family, went to Sheffield, Yorks to work in the steel mills, and Thomas Smith, his brothers, John and Alfred Henry came to to America. Things were depressed in Oxford at that time and they left to better themselves.
Someone in England wrote:
The 1870s were a time of great depression in agriculture - which was the basis of almost all of Oxfordshire's economy. So people left rural areas in droves to find work in industrial centres or anywhere they could find it often their only alternative was the workhouse. Once one member of a family found work somewhere others would hear about it, perhaps the first could put in a word for them with his employers - and so family and friends migrated in the first chaps wake.
Another person added:
"Depressed in Oxford". In almost all rural areas! Rural depopulation was proceeding apace.
Folly Farm 1 Across the field to Folly Farm just outside of Blackthorn. Thomas and Matilda Smith lived here from 1866 to 1870. Their first child, Edith, was born in Bicester, and the last, Florence in Lower Heyford, but the middle four, Emily, Herbert, Beatrice and Minnie were born here in Blackthorn. Thomas probably worked at the windmill at this time. This picture was taken 8 Nov 1966 by J. Richard Smith

A fireplace in each room. Ceilings 6 ½ feet high. Doors 5 ½ feet high. Tiny spiral staircase to the upstairs. Several small rooms. Rock with a tile roof. Some newer additions to barns of brick. One fireplace larger square. One small ornate.”

The effect was very nice. You will see my stepmother and my husband and myself all on Marjorie’s right hand. But Elsie got to the wrong side somehow or other and didn’t notice it. I have put a little mark over Elsie’s head so you will know. Marjorie has got a very nice steady young fellow and a very comfortable home. They are very happy and we are very fond of him. FAMILY OF THOMAS SMITH AND HIS THIRD WIFE, MARGARET BONHAM
Thomas Smith born 4 Sept 1837, Bicester, d 25 Dec 1914, Salt Lake City, Utah
md 1. Matilda Heritage 12 Apr 1864 (she died 29 May 1872 Bicester,
Oxfordshire)
md 2. Mary Ellen (Nellie) Smith 5 July 1874 (she died 1877/1989
Pennsylvania)
md 3. Margaret Bonham 1879 (she died 27 Jan 1942 Sale Lake City, Utah)
After Matilda Heritage Smith, Thomas’s first wife, died in 1872, Thomas married Matilda’s sister’s eldest daughter, Mary Ellen (Nellie) Smith. He came to America with her and three of Matilda’s children. Nellie had three children, Nellie, Lillie and Walter. Nellie and her daughter, Lillie, died in Pennsylvania. Thomas then married Margaret Bonham. Margaret’s sister, Mary Bonham Scott, adopted Walter. Margaret had three
children. Lynnville Bonham Smith born in Pennsylvania, Myrtle Margaret Smith , and Ethel Irene Smith born in Salt Lake City. Lynnville was a machinist with the railroad and moved around the western US a number of times. Ethel Irene never married.
Lynville August 26, 2004 Dear Vicki, I just found a picture in Richard's cousin's book (Eva Jane Smith Bjornson) which I am attaching. Do you know any of these people. Someone wrote all the names on the back and then someone else cut the borders off the picture and cut most of the names off. All that is left written on the back now is:”...day, Mrs. P. Bo...Mrs. Bonham's sister...L.B. Smith, ...Bill Jones, H.J. ..” .I'm wondering if Mrs. Bonham's sister is Ethel who was on one of your pictures. And if the L.B. Smith is Lynville Smith, full brother to Myrtle Margaret Smith. And if the H.J. is Herbert James Smith - half brother to Lynville and Myrtle. The man on the right looks very much like Herbert James Smith.
Donnette
The picture of HJ Smith looks as if he is about 50 years old. As he was born in 1867 that would mean the picture could have been taken about 1917. In 1917 Lynville Bonham Smith would have been about 34 years old.
Reverse of picture Showing the names that were left after someone cut most of them off the back.

Lyn’s daughter Eleanor Smith, daughter of Lynnville Bonham Smith, age 7 (she was born 5 June 1908) 1915 - back of picture says: " 7 years old Eleanor Smith. (to) Bert & dau - Hope this finds you all well and happy. Clara".

Do you have the home email address for your dad and mom? Is it garth-childs@yahoo.com? If not, what is it? Your dad said he thought that was right but he hadn’t received the photos I sent all of you.
Thanks. It must be a VERY long log time. Are you fine? I hope so. Love, Aunt Myrna

Kevin:There home e-mil address is garth_childs@yahoo.com He said the same thing to me. I know there is a very long lag time from msn to yahoo.
I am doing great! I have been busy with work. I am now working part time with the mail order pharmacy and part time with pharmacy purchasing for Kaiser Permanente. We are in the middle of switching over to a new ordering system. I have been working full time in purchasing because of the switch and February has been very busy. The new system isn't working how it should and the old system crashing. I can not wait for April!!
In April I will be going to Hawaii. It was a Christmas present. A great present if you ask me!! After the past month of work I can not wait to leave.
How have you been????
Myrna:
Ah, Hawaii! When you get there, think of me. You know, I was supposed to be born in Hawaii. My guardian angel got mixed up and dropped me off in Utah. There is a poor little girl in Hawaii who was supposed to be dropped off in Utah who is just suffering from the heat. (Just kidding. But if I find out that is what really happened, I will be ticked off.) Who gave you a Christmas present like that? I want to get on their list.
We have the usual life—too much to do and not enough time to do it in We are still working at the temple on Friday and Saturday. I baby sit three or five (depending on the week) grandkids on Wednesday and Thursday. Sometimes there are more, if school is out. Monday and Tuesday are newspaper days
Leonard is still helping Jim (Julie’s husband, Jim Jones) with the bees. It has been a hard year for them because of the accident at Las Vegas where they lost one-third of the business because a trucker helping haul them hit the bank of concrete and dumped the load. The insurance still hasn’t settled but they are rebuilding anyway.
Todd will be re-located in Ohio. Discover Card gave him a promotion. They are excited but I am sad.
Are you getting the pictures of your ancestors?
You won’t have time to read this.
