Cochranes to Celebrate 50th

This is Candy Cochrane Field sending this. Yes, I did hack into my mom's email account.

Jim and Saundra Cochrane's children will be hosting a party to celebrate Jim and Saundra's 50th Wedding Anniversary this summer.  While technically it is supposed to be a surprise party, I know that Todd let the cat out of the bag so mom and dad have an idea that something is going on, they don't know exactly what so please don't email mom back - don't respond to this email from her.

Anyways, if you would like an invite to their 50th Wedding Anniversary, please send me your address.  My email address is candy.field@hotmail.com.  I just sent this to everyone on her email list so it probably doesn't apply to some of you and if you know of anyone who mom doesn't email that I need an address for, please send me that info. also.

Thanks for helping me out with this.

Any questions, you can email at the above address.

Thanks,

Candy

To Knight Family Members

To Knight Family Members:

The Colesville Restoration Group (who live in AZ) are the owners of the Josiah Stowell Home and Knight Farmhouse in Nineveh N.Y. (Colesville area).    They have been working on the Joseph Knight house in New York for a few years when they can to restore the house.   They and the local Stake are having a dedication/open house for the Knight Farmhouse in the afternoon on Sunday June 3rd.  They, with the help of the local LDS Stake, institute students and missionaries, have restored the inside of the house and made the outside nice with a parking area for visitors etc.   The Church Educations System has also added the Knight House and the Stowell House to the locations studied as part of Church History so students can learn more about the Colesville Branch and Joseph and Emma Smith’s early years.   They would love it if any of the Knight Family could be there. Perhaps there is someone who needs to be in that area for business, family, or vacation at that time.   Does anyone know if there are any Knight relatives living in New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland,  or near enough to travel there?      This house will become a popular stopping point when the Harmony Pennsylvania visitors center is finished.

If you would like to contribute to this project, you can do so at the reunion, or if you are not able to attend the reunion, you may contact James Knight at jamesk@eatonarch.com for more information.

Also, if you are not able to attend the reunion and want to purchase some of the other items that will be for sale there, you can use the attached order form to purchase those itemsor contact Gordon Knight at gwknght@comcast.net.

Many of you have emailed requesting more information about the Knight Farmhouse Dedication in Colesville.  Here is the information that we have:

First, the Dedication has been changed to Saturday, June 2nd at 4:30 p.m.

The location of the farmhouse is:

Knight House -     Latitude - 42°11'13.78"N   Longitude - 75°36'19.03"W
That would be on the west side of Hwy. 233 a half mile south of the bridge from the village of Ninevah. (Not far from I-88, but there is no exit right there. The closest exit is Exit 6 to Ninevah.)

In case for some reason no one is at the house when you get there, here is the contact info of a neighbor who can let you in: Phil Sherman at 607-967-8059.

Here is the information from the Knight Family contact person, Raphael Mecham - Colesville Branch Restoration Group:

"The parking lot is being donated by the local Stake, material (within reason), and labor.  However, we do have an expense that we would welcome and appreciate any financial assistance.  We are installing a bronze statue of Hyrum Smith, 1st Branch President, and the Prophet Joseph.  They will be half life size, situated on a beautiful granite slab atop a stone pillar with a raised letter bronze plaque as follows:

The Prophet Joseph Smith
And his Devoted Brother Hyrum

In October of 1830 Hyrum brought his family from
Palmyra, New York to the home of his longtime
friend Newell Knight.  He came by appointment from
Joseph Smith to become the first Branch President of
the newly organized Colesville Branch
of the LDS Church.

Newel Knight recorded, “Most of Hyrum’s time, as also
That of my own, was spent in the villages around,
Preaching the gospel wherever we could find any who
would listen”.  The fullness of the gospel of
Jesus Christ was restored through the
Prophet Joseph Smith with his family and friends
Always by his side.

John Taylor said of Joseph and Hyrum,
“In life they were not divided and
In death they were not separated”.

D&C 135:3

Monument erected May 2012
Colesville Branch Restoration

The cost of the Bronze, plaque, granite slab plus shipping is about $5 thousand.  If the Knight family wishes to participate in the sharing of the costs we would be thrilled."

As the Knight Family Organization, we want to help, financially, with this restoration project and the bronze statue.  James Knight has done an amazing job of putting together a special plaque that includes a slab of granite from Lydia Knight's original headstone (that was vandalized and had to be replaced - will be rededicated during the reunion) and will be offering these at the reunion.  There is a suggested donation amount of $27 for each plaque including the stand. There will also be a DVD of the Knight House available for a $15 donation as well.   [Of course separate donations are welcome as well.]  The money will go to the Colesville Branch Restoration Group to help fund their restoration efforts and for the new monument featuring Hyrum Smith (first Colesville Branch President – first branch of the church) and his brother Joseph.

If you are not attending the reunion but would still like to purchase a plaque or DVD, please contact James Knight directly at Jamesk@eatonarch.com
Attached are pictures of the plaques and statue found at the Knight Farmhouse.  We hope you will consider donating to the restoration project.

Tyler and Marianne had a boy on May 1, 2012. He weighed 8 lbs and was 20 inches. They named him Rhett James Dixon. Mom and baby are doing great.  I can't believe I have 5 grandkids. I must be getting old :)  They are so fun. I thought you might want to see some pictures.  They were taken the evening he was born so he has changed a little since then.

We love you all!

OH, I GOT TIFF'S BABY'S NAME WRONG; IT IS ADELYN LAY.

Andreia and Blake (Titan's dad) are getting married Saturday evening.  They chose not to have a reception;   just a little open house after the wedding .  It is to be at Karma's brother Tom's big million dollar home in Bountiful and Blake's family's Bishop is going to do the service.  Instead of a reception, they chose to have 50 friends and family for lunch at Rodizio's Brazilian restaurant  at Trolley Square.  We have all been there many times it is Jim and the two kids' favorite place to eat    .

Have a good weekend.   Love you much,  Eva

I was going to call but the time escapes ME; a day is over before I know it.

Jens Loves Bread Pudding and This Is the Recipe

Little Jens loves bread pudding. I made some for our Sunday dessert and he ate and ate and ate. Julie is going to make it for him for his birthday instead of cake which he does not like. Here is the recipe I have. I had one from Grandma Smith which was much like this one. Of course, it was mostly an adventure to cook following the old recipes. It was "butter the size of an egg, a large handful of sugar, a pinch of salt, a sprinkle of nutmeg," etc. Great-grandmother Mina had larger hands than mine and Grandma Smith had smaller ones, so whose handful was best?

Amish Bread Pudding (I think ours was English Bread Pudding since the Smiths were ENGLISH and were proud to eat that way!)
2 cups of half and half milk (or thick milk which was probably just whole milk so I used a pint of whipping cream I had and the rest skim milk)
1/4 cup butter
2/3 cup brown sugar
6 eggs
2 tsp. cinnamon
1/8 to 1/4 nutmeg (a sprinkle)
1 tsp. vanilla
12 buttered bread slices, cubed
1/2 cup raisins (optional and I didn't use them)
Beat eggs together slightly using a fork. Add all ingredients, except butter and bread cubes. (So combine milk, sugar, eggs, cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla.) Place bread cubes in a buttered 9- by 13-inch pan. Pour liquid mixture on top. Mix lightly to make certain the bread is coated. Top with dots of butter. Bake at 350-degrees for 45 minutes or until done. Test using the knife method.

Mary Baptized and Cards Forgotten

I forgot to give you your birthday card yesterday. I am sorry. Now it will be late. Happy Birthday anyway.

I feel better about my talk. I found out that object lessons are OK everywhere except at the pulpit in Sacrament meeting. That plus the fact that the Primary Stake Presidency asked for a copy. Also, Dad thought it was wonderful and he is my worst critic. So I can just keep on keeping on.

I am in such awe of Jim's mom. She is one of those who can do it all. I know, I know, never compare yourself with anyone.

I do love you and I hope that your birthday is outstanding.

For A.J.: I thought you were coming to Mary's baptism so I did not mail A.J.'s card. Now it will be late. I am sorry. I will send it tomorrow but that means that it will be late. Tell him that I love him and I am sorry.

Myrna wrote: I have a new appreciation for the work you do as a trainer. I studied and worried and then I had only 10 minutes. So, of course, I asked a few questions and cut a lot out. When I was done, Sister B. stood up and gave the items I didn't have time for in addition to what else she had planned to say. Oh, well! At any rate, I see how difficult it must be to get the training that needs to be done, done. ;)

I hope each of your students came away from the competition with great honors.

Lots of love, M

Myrna's 1981 Journal, Page 2

The honest truth of the matter is that I'm converted to everybody else keeping a journal but maybe I don't really want to keep one myself. The clincher is always the idea that your progeny will know what you are really like but, to be honest, I don't want my progeny to know what I'm really like. In fact, the less they know what I am really like, the happier I'll be.

I'm a person who holds resentments and keeps lists inside my mind. I continually work to not be like that. That holding on to things can't be something you want others to emulate. I have a struggle trying to love others (this does not include my children whom I always love) and I have a struggle trying to forgive. That includes forgiving myself. I sometimes wonder if it's possible to "love everyone." I wonder if it is possible to forgive and "remember it no more."

At this stage in my life, I'm not even sure what I want or who I want to be and I'm 41. My life is nearly half over by regular standards and I don't even know what I want to do with what is left.

Many days, I have to work on being forgiving. People can say the meanest things. Some of them mean to be hurtful and others do not mean to be they just, I suppose like me, make comments without thinking.

My life is just a work in progress. I am, eventually, and who knows when, going to have to die and meet my Savior. I think I would rather not be so mortal and so much the "natural man" and would much rather be more Christlike, more like the Master. I really don't want my unrepented sins to be broadcast from the rooftops for all to know.

What to write

Myrna wrote: What scripture did I write on Emma's pillowcase? I didn't make a note of it and I don't remember. I like the idea of having a fabric-painted pillowcase with a reminder on it of the important event that baptism is. I liked what I came up with but I did not make a note of it and I do not remember what I wrote.

There are two talks that grandparents have the privilege of giving at baptism time. I have two different talks for the two occasions but I like to give object lessons because I think they are better remembered. The pillowcase works well for the one.

Kirsten wrote: No scripture, just "I will take upon me the name of Jesus Christ."

Myrna wrote: Thank you, Dear Heart! I love you and hope all is well at your house.

Salt on Soil

AnnMarie wrote: The problem with salt is that it can make your ground sterile for up to 10 years.  I read an article about using salt as a weed killer.  It would be fine in areas you don't want to plant for years.

Myrna Trauntvein sent: Spring is coming and this is the BEST weed spray. I made 3 gallons for around $4.00 last year after seeing a pin. Worked

better than Round Up and killed the weeds/stray grass on first application. One gallon of Apple Cider Vinegar, 1/2 cup

table salt, 1 teaspoon Dawn. Mix and pour into a smaller spray bottle. (you can purchase 3 gallon size Apple Cider Vinegar in

the canning section of a good hardware store--cheap--or the dollar store. White vinegar works also.)

I used white vinegar but be careful with the spray. It did kill the weed but also the grass in a little patch around the weed.

Dad and I tried straight salt on a patch of wild rye a few years ago. It caused them to die back for a few weeks but that was it. We used a whole water conditioner-sized sack of salt. Nothing. When the ancient soldiers used salt to make fields sterile so their enemies could not grow crops, it took wagon-loads of salt to do the trick. I did not look it up on the web.

I have used vinegar alone, without other additives, for years. It is an old pioneer treatment. I think it works just as well without the salt. I have planted where I used this within three days--how long it took the weeds to die. The plants have done very well. In fact, for a few of them, I think vinegar improved growing conditions. Here in Nephi we have already salty soil--alkaline. However, the Garden Counselor thinks that the salt should be left out and that vinegar is bad also. See: http://www.garden-counselor-lawn-care.com/home-made-weed-killer.html. And also: http://www.garden-counselor-lawn-care.com/weed-killer.html.

I think Round-Up is terrible. Dad uses it but I have more trouble with it than with vinegar.

Back to AnnMarie: "Salt is problematic. It will get rid of your weeds, but also anything else nearby. It will hang around, leaving you with long term difficulty when you want to grow desirable plants. You may have heard the term “burned a plant with fertilizer”. That is because regular fertilizer is a salt. Apply it too heavily and plants die. Salt can remain in the soil, even affecting roots from distant plants.

If your desire in wanting to use home made weed killer is because you want natural products, instead of chemicals, don’t use salt as a weed killer. It defeats the effort of trying to develop healthy soil."

Another of Myrna's Classmate Dies

Dear Classmates,

We have lost another classmate, J.R. Scott.  Don't know if many of you remember him, he was from Price.  We became acquainted with him while we were living in Hanna, Wyoming as he (and his family) was also living and working there.

He was residing in Moab at the time of his passing.  Our sympathy goes out to his family.

Myrna Had DVTs

Myrna wrote: I have had several DVTs. I had to take anticoagulants of varying strengths with those.

After AnnMarie, my fifth child, they prescribed shots of Heprin in my tummy. It didn't matter WHO gave me the shot, I always bruised. At any rate, Cousin Toni, they may be able to take you off the shots sooner than they think they can. That was what happened to me. It just depends on how your body responds.

I had DVTs each time I had a baby (that's eight) once more when I accidentally hurt my leg when one of my little kids climbed under a clothing rack at a store and tipped it over on me. Of course, I only needed the Heprin shots after AnnMarie was born. Then I had an embolism and they were afraid that it would move to my heart or a lung. A day or two before I went into labor with her I accidentally got my leg shut in a car door so part of that problem came from injury and part from pregnancy.

It sounds like you are having a great ;) (that's a wink filled with sarcasm) time. I am really sorry that you have been so ill and that you are just having one problem after another. You are in my thoughts a lot and I keep hoping that you will have good news soon. I will keep praying for you. Is your cancer in remission?
