Jessie and Vivian

When my Grandmother Vivian and her sister, Jessie, were teens, Jessie tied my grandmother to a bedpost and then went downstairs to tell her (Vivian's) date that she was going to be late? Jessie visited with him and visited with him. Grandma couldn't get loose. FINALLY, Jessie went upstairs and let her go. THEN she wondered why Vivian was angry because she was just having fun. It ended up being OK, probably right away, but for certain 40 years later when they were all laughing about it one evening. That's how I heard the story. They did love each other a lot.

Jessie also had a little teasing streak with her father. They lived in a house next to the girl's gym in Provo. (The building still stands across the street from what was once the BYU Accademy but is now Provo City Library.) The house they lived in is no longer there. Now it is an apartment building. But BYU held dances in the gym. The students were allowed to waltz but they could not fox trot. Grandpa Pritchett liked to watch the dancers from his upstairs bedroom window which faced the girl's gym. Aunt Jessie, knowing he was watching, would take her dance partner over along the edge of the floor so Grandpa P. could see them and do a few steps of the scandalous fox trot just to tease him. After the dance, he would scold her and she would laugh.

Grandmother Smith chose Jessie's name. She said that when Jessie was born, they lived in Sanpete County. Down the street from their home a young woman lived. She had the most beautiful read hair. Her name was Jessie. So when the parents, Mina Ericksen and Frank Pritchett, asked Vivian what she would like her sister to be named, she suggested "Jessie." They honored her request.

The day that Jessie was born, the doctor was sent for and Vivian was sent outside to wait. When the doctor came back out of the house, he told Vivian that she could go back inside and see the baby. "Where did she come from?" Vivian asked. "We found her under a rose bush," the doctor replied. Hmm, well, we all know the truth of that story. Aunt Jessie said, in later years, "Well, after they found me they hung me on a clothesline to dry and I fell off into a mud puddle. That's why I have all these freckles."

We all remember what a quick wit Aunt Jessie had and what fun she was. In all of her snapshots she is laughing. I wish we could hear what she was saying. I think that we would laugh also.

Melanie and AnnMarie Make Plans 24MAY10

The following is my flight information. I will rent a car and drive Braden and myself to AnnMarie's. We need to run an errand to Mr. Mac's on Tuesday. Other than that, we weren't sure what we would do. Braden wants to walk up Y Hill, but I'm not sure he is allowed to do that. We will check with the Stake President when we talk with him on Sunday. Braden was thinking the Open House times that would be good would be either 5:30-7:30, or 6-8.

Mom, Dad said that you had some meeting that you had to attend on Tuesday...what time would work best for you?

AnnMarie, what would you like me to do? I have been so busy trying to get things ready so that Braden is prepared for two years of service, that I haven't really thought about the Utah Open House. It seems like it is coming too quickly for me. Would you like me to call Sam's and have Eric put together a few meat and cheese trays like we did for Siovhan? We could have him save some of their rolls for us as well. Then I could pick up the trays on Tuesday afternoon and store them in your refrigerator. Vegies are always a sure hit, as well. Does Sam's do a good vegetable tray, or would it be best to put one together by ourselves?

Let me know what your thoughts are.

Thanks.
Mel

I think I could do pulled pork or bbq chicken sandwiches or sloppy joes.  (I can't remember what all I have had at some of the other gatherings Braden has been to.)   I usually do either of the first two meats for large gatherings in my crockpot, because it is very easy and feeds a lot of people.  Or we could do the deli meats with sliced cheese.  Brandon and I just did that on Sunday for a ward youth training conference, and it went well.  We don't need to buy premade platters, it is a lot more expensive.  I actually bought Land O'Frost meat because it was on sale, then folded each slice in half and placed them "decoratively" on platters.  I bought sliced cheese, cut them in half and arranged them on another platter.  I got a bottle of pickles.  I bought a head of lettuce and tore it into roll sized pieces and put them and some carrots on another platter.  Add a bottle of mustard and mayo and the youth thought they were having deli sandwiches, they ate it all up. Whatever he wants to eat, we can do it economically and very easily.

Walmart has steak rolls that are really inexpensive and great for serving a lot of people.  I could pick up four of those bags (they have around 24 rolls in them). I would just do carrots, celery, some cherry tomatoes, and some pea pods, with just a dip.  I have platters.  Someone could bring some bags of chips.  We could ask attending family to bring side dishes.  I would also buy a big bag of salad.

For dessert, I bought some Betty Crocker brownie mixes on sale, and then thought we could make some cookies (easy-to-serve sweets), and then Braden could request whatever he wants for his last dessert out of the MTC.
Just let me know about the menu.  I was planning on picking up the food on Tuesday so you could enjoy hanging out with your son.

It would be good if he could estimate how many people will come, just so we don't end up with too much food.

As far as the times go, any of those will work just great.  I will be home all day except from 3 to 4:30 running children all over.
The basement will not be done, so we will be crossing our fingers for sunshine and place tables and chairs outside.  If it is raining, we can put the tables and chairs up downstairs, it just will be on concrete.  The flooring guys were supposed to work all this week and they are coming tomorrow.

Shawn's Thoughts About Accident When Elaine Was Killed

Thanks Mom,

That is more of the story than I ever remember your having told me before. Even though Webb was acquitted, I imagine he still had to deal with the memory for however long he lived. I don’t suppose such things are easy to forget. I remember vaguely, although I do not remember the details, of what you said about Ferron Gardner, and how he partly blamed himself. I guess it might have been the same with Grandpa Trauntvein and the Price Canyon accident.

Love, Shawn

Death

From Kimberly:

No, I am not going to funeral.  Was going, but my mom, dad, grandma Nonie, Pop-Pop and Ket are going--driving.  But they are leaving today and coming back Sunday.  The trip was too long for me, there is so much to juggle this week.  They are goint to go to Napa as well and visit with Laverne and her family.

When Ed passed, they requested no flowers and donations to the Navy fund, as well.

Please forward this to you advertising department.

What Does This Mean?

GMT is Greenwich Mean Time (also known as Zulu Time). Greenwich, England is at Longitude 0⁰ 0’ 0” and time in the rest of the world is measured based on time zones where the location of the time zone determines how much time you add or subtract from Greenwich Mean Time. If I remember right we subtract 7 or 6 hours from GMT (depending on whether we are in daylight savings or not). So the time in your message (09:35 GMT) would have been 3:35 PM Mountain Daylight Time (like right before you emailed us).

Braden Drop Off

Just given this information about family members and friends at the drop-off site:
Congratulations on your mission call. Please be aware that as of June, 2009, new missionary day family orientation has been discontinued. New missionaries are now dropped off at the MTC to begin their formal missionary training program.
On your scheduled arrival date several hundred new missionaries will be arriving at the MTC within a very short period of time. Because of the large numbers, only one vehicle per missionary family will be able to enter the MTC grounds to drop you off. This vehicle should contain yourself, your luggage and a few members of your immediate family. Other family members and friends will not be able to drive in, nor walk on to the MTC campus.
As such, it would be most helpful to this intake process if you would have your farewell activities with family and friends prior to your arrival at the MTC. Because the drop off time is very short, you will only have a few brief moments for a quick farewell and there will be no opportunity for picture taking. Thank you for your cooperation in this process.
We are very excited about your future arrival at the Provo Missionary Training Center. We hope that this information will be helpful as you make your final arrival preparations.
From: Shawn Trauntvein
I should have remembered to tell you. My friend John Alius still works there. I went and visited him once during the summer and he said they were working on changes to how missionaries would be dropped off, and that they were planning on discontinuing the farewell meeting. I forgot about those changes, but shouldn’t have.
From: Melanie Bolton
I knew they had discontinued the farewell meeting. I didn't know they didn't allow you to take pictures in the drive-thru area. We'll work it all out.

Braden's Topic for this Sunday's Talk
Braden received the word that he will be speaking this Sunday, Mother's Day. He told us that he was waiting for the topic. I just received this email from the Ward Exec. Sec. this morning, confirming what Braden had told us yesterday.

I so wanted to be there. I have learned my lesson, when Benjamin and Michael go on their missions, I will come to the temple endowment session and not plan on coming for the sacrament meeting. I don't know how, at this date, we can get there. I could pay, but it is so close in time. I just feel that a good grandma would figure things out better. We are so proud of Braden for the fine man he has become and want to do all we can to be a support for him.
Love, Mom
