Howards and Pearl Harbor

Utah students, veterans commemorate Pearl Harbor anniversary together

PEARL HARBOR, Hawaii — For the last few days, nearly 100 Utah children and two men in their 90s have been on an emotional roller coaster in Hawaii.

Thanks to money raised by the students, together they're reliving the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor that took place 70 years ago next week.

The marching band from Timpview High School in Provo came to the Punchbowl Cemetery pay their respects to the 28,000 veterans of the Pacific who are buried there. Max Burggraaf, now 93 years old, also came from Utah, along with 90-year-old Ken Potts.

"This is a sacred place, and I have deep feelings about this," Burggraaf said.

On December 7, 1941, the Japanese launched a surprise attack on Pearl Harbor, killing thousands of Americans.
The band played in the Punchbowl Cemetery and at memorial sites next to Pearl Harbor in ceremonies honoring the men and women killed on Dec. 7, 1941. Potts and Burggraaf were guests of honor.

They were there 70 years ago, when Japanese planes swooped in. Potts was aboard the USS Arizona. He went back by boat, with Timpview band members, to the Arizona memorial.

Potts stood in silence for 15 minutes, looking at the names of 1,100 shipmates who died here. Until five years ago, he never returned, "just because I didn't want to go through it again," he explained.

Burggraaf was on the badly damaged USS Nevada. She was deliberately beached during the attack so she wouldn't sink and block the channel. "It's pretty easy for me to get upset emotionally," he said, pausing with emotion, "when I think about these things."

The students have been rehearsing and studying history for 14 months. Along the way, they decided to raise money to take Potts, Burggraaf and their wives along.

"We all realized that this was bigger than ourselves, and this was for the veterans, and probably the only way that we could get close to repaying them for what they've done for us," said band member Nicole Hopkinson.

As the band played "Anchors Aweigh," two old Navy men rose to their feet and stood proudly.

"Being able to literally sit at their feet and learn from them has been a very powerful experience for all of us," said Dave Fullmer, Timpview High's band director.

When the students sat with the veterans in the cemetery, history seemed alive, memories deepened and tears flowed.

"This has been a wonderful experience," Burrgraaf told the students. "The music struck me. I felt it deeply."

"It's humbling. I mean, the way we've been treated is unbelievable," Potts said.

When their week is over, the students and survivors will fly home and gather next week at the Utah State Capitol to remember, once again, the sacrifices made 70 years ago on December 7.

Shawn wrote: Thanks. It was an obviously touching moment. I also watched some of the others. What a wonderful experience for them.

Kalen Howard wrote: Were famous!  It seems like such a good experience for the kids to appreciate what we have... Is there another trip coming up where I could take my scouts?

Britt Howard wrote: Thanks for sending this to me.  That was neat and probably a great experience for them.  I watched the video and captured images of Megan carrying the flag and of the strange man in the sunglasses standing in the background.
He looks a lot like Brandon.
Yes, I will show my mom and dad.

Howards and Pearl Harbor‏

Here are two videos about the kids and Brandon at Pearl Harbor.  One of them is the KSL story about the event.  The other is the video of them singing the Navy hymn at USS Arizona.  They practiced that song a lot, these are band kids, not choir kids.  They sound really good though.  Brandon's two grandpas and my grandfather served in WWII so this was a tribute to all three great-grandparents in a way for my kids.  In the KSL story you will see Megan march out carrying the Navy flag, you will also see a familiar face in 80s mirrored sunglasses at the end, and in the pictures on the left hand side you will see Kyle and his clarinet.

Did you see the video on KSL about Pearl Harbor?  They have pictures on the left side from the concert.  Also, they told Brandon that they would play a larger segment of the band on Dec. 7--Pearl Harbor Day.

We love Todd

Lucy Jones wrote: Thank you for letting me know about Todd's stroke site, Myrna. Sounds like Todd is making the best of a bad situation like I always knew he would. He's always been such a good boy. We wish him all the best. We have a nephew on Nelson's side that this same thing happened to a few years ago at about the same age--different results and challenges--but he's hung in there and is doing quite well. He's gotten a lot of things back that the doctors said he never would. We had another nephew on Nelson's side that had a stroke at the same age also, and he could never get back to breathing on his own, so he passed away a couple of months later. It seems to be happening more and more often these days, for some reason. Thanks again. I'm thinking of you, too, and how difficult it's also been for you, especially with Todd so far away. Take care.....

Leon Gourdin Bjarnson
Leon Gourdin Bjarnson
1923 ~ 2011
Leon Gourdin Bjarnson, our dear father, grandfather, brother and friend, passed away peacefully at his home on Saturday, the 19th of November, 2011. Courageous in life and death, he was born May 17th, 1923 to Ingimund Ray and Flora Gourdin Bjarnson in Springville, Utah. On June 12th of 1946 he married his "lovely sweetheart" Eva Jane Smith, who preceded him in death on February 18th 2011. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple on June 25th, 1954 as they became a forever family. He will be greatly missed, but is having a wonderful reunion.
He was happy in his childhood at home with his family. He graduated from Springville High school and afterward attended Frye Aircraft School in Salt Lake. Then he was off to San Diego California and worked for Solar Aircraft. He was drafted into the service of "his country" for WWII in 1943 where he served proudly overseas in combat and ultimately as Staff Sergeant in Germany. He returned home and worked at Geneva Steel while attending school for a four year machinist apprenticeship. He and Eva Jane then built their home in Springville.
He served in the Elders Quorum and as a counselor in two Bishoprics. He served as Bishop, Stake High Councilor and Stake Executive Secretary and other teaching and service capacities. He was proud to serve in the Priesthood. He and his wife served as guides in the Provo Tabernacle. They also enjoyed service in the Provo Temple. Later they served a mission together in the Hawaii Visitors Center, which they treasured immensely.
He enjoyed family vacations, fishing, work, home and service. He would say, "We love everyone", and he meant it.
He is survived by his four children; Linda Craig (Jim) of Mesa, Arizona; Karen Miner (Sherl) of Springville, Utah; Diane Poulson (Alan) of Springville Utah; Steven Leon Bjarnson (Margo) of Mapleton Utah; 21 grandchildren and 36 great-grandchildren; his brothers Hosmer Bjarnson of Orem, Lynn Bjarnson of Mapleton, and a sister Joyce Simpson of Springville. He was preceded in death by his parents Ingimund Ray and Flora Bjarnson, sisters Wilda Bjarnson, Rosalie Daybell Kirkwood Morgan, a brother Glen Bjarnson and a grandson Marcus Ash.
The family wishes to express their sincere appreciation and love for all those who showed him love and those special people from Community Nursing Services and Hospice of Utah, especially Becca.
Funeral Services will be held Saturday the 26th of November at 11 am in the Hobble Creek West Stake Center, 555 South 600 East (Averett Ave) Springville, Utah. I read the obituary after I read your note. I didn't know he was ill and that he needed hospice. I thought he seemed well enough at Eva Jane's funeral.

Some bad news‏

David's credit card was just compromised in the South in a Walgreens. He was concerned that all of you may have problems with your cards if they have hacked into the Trauntvein name. He has an early-warning program so that if anything over a certain amount is charged, Bree is warned on her cell. He doesn't know how much it will be nor how much he will lose because it hasn't come through Chase Bank yet.

Bad News

From Brandon (who, like Todd, makes his living in the world of credit card transactions),

He should be able to charge it back as unauthorized transactions. The merchants involved will need to produce a signed receipt showing that David authorized the purchase, or the merchant will be required to eat the charges as fraud. He shouldn’t be on the hook for any of the unauthorized charges.
His credit card issuer should close his account immediately and issue him a new card with a different number – if David contacted them already, they probably already did this.
He needs to dispute the charges within 60 days of when they hit his statement. He should still try to dispute them even if it has been longer.
Chances are, no one hacked in looking for Trauntveins.  It is much more likely that David’s number was stolen as he was using his card (by a store clerk or restaurant server), or by some employee of a merchant who has access to that information.  Or it is possible that a store’s information was hacked into.

David wrote: Well it was actually a debit card. I was worried because when I called the store manager last night he informed me that several cards were used by the same people for multiple gift cards that were purchased. I thought these people couldn't have done this unless the names were the same (or an idiot cashier). He couldn't tell me the names on the cards, just that they were credit cards a Discover, American Express, and I don't remember the others.

Just thought I would warn you if that was the case. Also they somehow manufactured a duplicate card because I have mine and the bank has not issued any other cards on my account.

Melanie wrote: Both of my credit cards in the last month have been hacked.

Todd wrote; Professional lingo. Like he got skimmed. Not hacked.

David wrote: Also, the bank said that I have to wait up to five business days for the transaction to post before they can take any action. Walgreens can't reverse the transaction because the card is cancelled and they have to have it in hand.

Melanie wrote: This is exactly what my credit card company told me. They closed both cards and reissued new ones with new PINs. I also got free credit report accounting from Chase.

Also, the disputing is easy to take care of. Every debit/credit agency now has a fraud department. David only has to fill out the forms and within days he will be credited his money back.

Mine was probably compromised in the airport when I traveled to Utah. I use cash for travel purchases now.

Kirsten wrote: That happened to us last year, but it ended up not being a big deal since we didn't authorize any of the transactions and Chase is a very big bank, used to these type of situations.  I talked to them over the phone about which charges weren't mine, then signed some additional paperwork regarding the unauthorized charges, and it was done within 30 days... Had new cards within a week.

To Todd

Myrna wrote: Todd, it does sound like you are getting back to your life. That is good.

Dad bought a new battery for the clock in Kirsten's guest room while we were there helping after the baby was born. Between our visit and the baby blessing, Kirsten's mom-in-law stayed in the room. When we arrived for the baby blessing, the clock didn't work again. Julie Waite was driven nuts by the tick-tick-tick. Dad said, "And that was a brand-new battery." Sometimes it pays to be hard of hearing. ;) As for me, I grew up with ticking clocks and they just remind me of my room at home. I had a wind-up alarm all my school years.

We are so happy that you are doing so much better. What a milestone. Back to driving! (AnnMarie tells me that she really objects to using more than one exclamation point at a time or I would have used a bunch. I thought you might be like her. Of course, Kirsten tells me that she objects to those who think they have to comment on every post someone makes. So, there you have it.)

We pray that you will continue to heal quickly. We love you! Happy Thanksgiving and Happy Birthday ahead. You should have received your card. I am sending this to Amy also, in case you are so overwhelmed with email that seeing another one just makes you groan.
Todd wrote prior to the posting above: So, there is a clock on the wall in the bedroom that is battery powered. It still goes tick-tick-tick. At 4:30am this morning, I took the battery out of it. I didn't sleep well last night. Kept thinking about too much on my mind. I was hoping to get a good rest in because I have my eye appointment today and didn't want to show up there tired. Oh well.

Picked up my truck Saturday evening. I drove to church yesterday and back. Spent the afternoon at home, didn't get in a nap, felt really stressed. Now, I have a headache today, I think from not getting enough sleep and the stess of yesterday. I drove in to work today. Had to go around a detour that I forgot was there since I haven't been driving. It has been a good morning at work though. I've been able to meet with people for their reviews, and get caught up on e-mail (a never ending task for me).

I have physical thereapy in an hour and then the eye appointment. Taking my quick 5 minutes to type something to you all, in case anyone was curious how I have been over the past couple of days. I'll add more tonight.

The original recipe for pie crust‏

EASY WESSON OIL PIE CRUST

2 c. sifted all-purpose flour
1 tsp. salt
3/4 c. Wesson oil (I use Canola)
1/4 c. cold milk
Sift dry ingredients into bowl. Pour oil and milk into one measuring cup, but do not stir. Dump into flour and salt mixture; mix with fork until cleans side of bowl. Form into ball; divide and roll between two pieces of wax paper. Makes a double crust for a top and bottom crust for an 8-inch pie.

Delicious Pecan Pie‏

3 eggs, beaten
3/4 cup light corn syrup
2 tablespoons dark corn syrup
3/4 cup light brown sugar
3 tablespoons butter, melted
1 pinch salt
1 1/2 cup pecans, quartered (I just chop them)
1 cup pecan halves
Directions
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
On a floured surface flatten dough ball large enough to make one crust with a rolling pin. Roll out into a circle that is one inch larger than pie dish. Place pie shell into dish and refrigerate until pie filling is complete.
To Make Pie Filling: In a medium bowl, mix together eggs, light and dark corn syrups, brown sugar, butter and salt. Spread quartered pecans over bottom of refrigerated pie crust. Pour syrup mixture over top of pecans, then arrange pecan halves on top of pie. Bake in a preheated 350 degrees F oven for one hour or until firm. (Cover edge of crust around the pie top with foil so it does not burn. Just fold the foil around the edge.) Let cool for one hour before serving because it takes awhile to set up.

Last time I made this pie I was out of dark corn syrup so I used all light. With the brown sugar to color it, it looked just great and tasted fine.

    Musical at TimpView

The musical starts at 7:30 and went until 10:30 last night.  They hope it will end earlier tonight.
Alyssa finally got in the primary cast after all of these years of lesser roles, and they messed up her name in the program.  She is Alice, and they put some other girl as Alice.  They can't reprint all of them either.  So watch for the girl in the short blond wig.  It is Alyssa.

Myrna wrote: They did reprint them all (the programs). I guess they just recycle paper. We were so thankful to be there. Please share the website so I can see photos. We were SO proud!
