You know how Dad

Upfront, neither Dad nor the other driver were injured.

You know how Dad said he didn't need the gift from Melanie of the AAA Roadside Assistance? Well he needed it today and both of us were grateful. Thank you! Dad had gone up to Provo to run some errands, find out how to use the Provo Airport and to pick up AnnMarie's youngest two from school because it was early day. Dad was on his way up University Ave headed north when a car turned from the turn lane (going south and turning east) while Dad was traveling in the inside lane. She said that she had been motioned on by someone in a red car and thought the coast was clear. Dad didn't see her speeding around the corner until it was too late. He said there was a lot of traffic on the inside lane and on the roadway, in general, with the traffic backed up at the stop light ahead. This occurred at the crossing of University Ave and 4th--there by the building that has, from time to time, been a VW garage (where we used to take the car to be repaired in the old days), a music store and is now a furniture store. When he struck her car, it spun around in traffic but missed hitting or getting hit by anyone else.

At any rate, our car is totaled. Dad struck her car on the right side at the rear with our car's passenger front side. Both airbags deployed but he was not hurt. Dad did not get a ticket but the pregnant young woman, who was headed to her doctor's office, did. The officer said he was a good driver and had good reaction time because he applied his breaks when he saw her and tried to move our car, as best he could in those crowded conditions. When the airbags deployed they broke the windshield and the dash. It is quite expensive to do that kind of auto repair and our car is old.

Dad had to call AnnMarie and have her get Randy Burnside to go to the school and get the kids and take them home. She then called Shawn and had him go down to the site and help Dad. She also called me.

The towing company, provided by AAA, towed our car all the way to Nephi and let Dad drive here in the cab with him. So now we have a ruined car sitting in our driveway waiting for the insurance adjuster to come and give it a once over.

We didn't get Todd called and we didn't even wish Toren a happy day via the internet.

Glad dad's doing ok.  How are you getting to the temple and airport?  Does her insurance (or yours) cover a rental?

We Have a Temple Family

We will be at the temple on Friday. We will be there to handle our two shifts. We are home. Sorry we missed your calls. Our answering machine saved them and we did listen. We have let all who need to know that we will be on duty on our appointed days. As to our son Todd's outlook, there will be some recovery time because of his left side. It is still numb but he can walk without a walker. The doctors told him that the feeling will come back but it may take a month or two. We did not make the trek to Ohio and our son and family. They wanted just to take care of it there and, against my better judgement and mother's need to fly to the side of the wounded, we stayed home. As you know, that is harder on the heart than going would have been. We may not have been of use but we could have been close. Amy, our daughter-in-law's father had gallbladder surgery at the same time that Todd was having his problem. Life events always happen in bunches, do they not? My Grandmother Smith used to tell me that three events would happen at the same, or close to the same, time. Amy also had a great-uncle buried at that time. Of course, none of us believe the old superstitions. Not even my grandmother did. :) We will always appreciate the care and love shown to us by our temple family. Thanks for caring!

Have you ever had the Factor Five Leiden test done? Both Melanie and Todd have Factor Five. Leonard has Factor Five. I do not. Melanie had a small stroke when she was 45. Todd is 45. Kirsten has also been tested and does not have it. The other kids have not been tested.

Hi,  I have never even heard of this and have never had the test, to my knowledge.  I will check with my Dr.   Mom probably had it; I do remember all of my life she had what they called deep vein thrombosis.  Dad would spend hours putting hot, wet packs on her legs when she would get cramps,  because she had so many blood clots; one broke loose and went to her lung before I was born and she  spent time in Salt Lake in the St. Marks hospital on Beck Street  in north Salt  Lake City ; another broke loose and went to her heart creating a heart attach in the 50s.  

I had five in one leg in 1995 & was in the hospital on heparin and coumadin for five days.  I took a baby aspirin every day until I had the 8th stroke  Mar. 7, 2010.

They told me no more at the hospital.  My neurologist told me none of my strokes have been caused by blood clots; the last one was from taking celebrex and premarin for years; they are things of the past now.      .
 
I am excited for this week end; I fly out Sat. at 10:;35; my friend Laura will pick me up at the airport at 2 p.m.   I am praying for good weather.

I am sure David (Dixon) has more butterflies than I do.  

I put Todd's name on the prayer roll t the Temple today. My first one took the longest to recover.

Cyst to be removed

Those of you who remember me compalining at the open house about my wrist and how it was so very sore, had a bump that was growing and would get shooting pains that would make my thimb go mumb, well, I went to the doctor today and it is a cyst. A ganglion cyst, also known as a bible cyst, is a swelling that often appears on or around joints and tendons in the hand or foot. The size of the ganglion or cyst can vary over time. It is most frequently located around the dorsum of the wrist and on the fingers. The term "Bible bump" comes from a common treatment in the past that consisted of hitting the cyst with a Bible or another large book. Rupture of the cyst is rarely curative - which means, trying to pop it probably won't fix it and might make it worse. Ganglion cysts are idiopathic, but presumably reflect a variation in normal joint or tendon sheath function. Cysts near joints are connected to the joint and the leading theory is that a type of check valve forms that allows fluid out of the joint, but not back in. The cyst contains clear fluid similar to, but thicker than, normal synovial fluid. They are most often found around the wrist joint, especially at the scapho-lunate joint, which accounts for 80 percent of all ganglion cysts.

The upshot is that next week the doctor will cut it out. With surgery, the recurrence rate is reduced to 5 to 10 percent (but neither of my other ones have ever come back). if the check valve at the joint capsule is removed. Arthroscopy of the wrist is becoming available as an alternative to open excision of ganglion cysts.

 An out-dated method of treating a ganglion cyst was supposedly to strike the lump with a large heavy book, causing the cyst to rupture and drain into the surrounding tissues. An urban legend states that since even the poorest households often possessed a Bible, this was commonly used, which led to the nicknaming of ganglion cysts as "Bible bumps" or "Gideon's disease."

My Dad, Howard Pitts, used to get these. So I say, "Thanks, Howard Pitts."
