From Beth Durfey, Dad's 2nd missionary companion's wife.

Hi Myrna,

Thanks for sending the article about the Payson Temple. Russell thinks they need to leave Nephi with Manti. I think it would be nice also.  I hate to see all the great Nephi people leaving. I know they may need the help when they open the new temple.  My sister, Maureen, missed helping opening the Huston Temple by moving to the SL Valley by she helped with one of the new temples. I can't remember it was the last one that opened.  She said it was a job as they did not give them enough people to start with. There were not even enough to fill all the jobs.  I hope they learned with that temple & will not do that with the Payson Temple. The only experienced people starting that temple were a few workers from the River Jordan Temple. They used them as supervisors. That temple does as Manti, & the sister fill all the positions. Maureen was not use to that as River Jordan has divisions where sisters are in a division for greeting, baptism, one that sits the posts, one that does the veil, one for initiatory, one to go on sessions, I'm not quite sure how they broke it all down but Maureen was trying to explain it. I probably got it all wrong. but it was not as we have it.  She had a hard time as they didn't give her enough people to fill all the positions when you consider how many places there need to cover. She is sweet but will not be walked over as I am, She was in a meeting before opening the temple to make sure all was ready, she told them that she did not have enough sisters & that she would be able to cover these places & she would have to let the other places go until they got her some more sisters.  They eventually got her more sisters & things are going much more smoothly now.

I was not going to go into all that my fingers just got carried away. LOL

I have been very pleased to see you playing many of the games I play. My problem is I have gotten myself into so many I am going to have to back out of a few of them.  I really like the gardening ones.  Some of them think they have to turn into towns. Now I am now sure I want to continue playing them.  I will have to see how they turn out.  I really love the collection games.  101 eggs & more, egg buddies, hatchlings.  I need to get back to working with Indexing, & Genealogy. I have let those go for too long now. When they changed things around the programs wouldn't work on my computer then I changed to my laptop. I need to go over to the Stake Family Search Center, that is not the name but you know what I mean. They will get me set up again, help me on my way. I hope it will not take too long. As I am getting worse at being able to sit up for long. I need to force myself though.

I'll talk to you later.  This is much longer than I planned on.

Have a wonderful day,

Beth Durfey

My friends in my ward in Nephi and I are thinking that we will fast and pray from now until the temple is opened that there will be a lot of people move into the Payson area. We are praying that they will have so many build homes there that they will have to organize new stakes. That will result in there being too many stakes for the temple to take and we will HAVE to stay back so we will still be in the Manti Temple district. The prophet would say, "Sorry, but there are just too many stakes in the Payson Temple district so you will need to keep going to the Manti Temple." Then we will all cheer and be happy. None of us want to leave Manti. Now, you have to agree, it could happen. Love, M

You are right I really could happen, if enough of us fasted & prayed about it. I will join you in the praying as I can't fast right now because of my health but I will pray with you.  Russell was thinking that it might be a possibility as we talked about that a while ago. He told me there were some new housing developments going in & there will be new ones go in near the temple. In Utah there are always new housing close to the temple. Someone should build a large condo so some of the older people could move in there & have no yard work to do & could just walk to the temple. They have a place like that in Cardston, Alberta, It is very nice for the older people who lived in the town further away & now want to retire doing temple work & genealogy work. I do hope it works & that you will be able to still come here.

AnnMarie's Talk

Click on or paste this link, then click on my picture at the bottom.  My talk at the law school.  See what you think. Thank heavens they didn't quote me saying judges leave work at 5:00 (said with a chuckle) or that I have seen mad-dog defense attorneys go to jail/federal prison or that 35-year veteran officers lose evidence.  I didn't know the talk was being videotaped and reported on.  The candles were because I didn't have a lot of air fresheners lying around--masking agent.

Oh, oh, what did Grammy start?

Sorina was going to birthday party Friday night.  I had her sign the card to go with her gift.  I glanced at the card and read below her signature.  “use this money to buy a treat”  I said, what money?  She replied, yours.  Put a buck in there.

We figure she got this idea from you, as you always send a card with $ inside for a treat.

We thought it was cute, she’s using your example.

There is an order to her world.  If you send a card, it should have a buck for treats.  If you send home lunch, you’d better put a note in it.  And lots of little things that we have done that for her become important or “just the way” things are done.

For Toren he won’t leave carpool unless I tell him I love him and wish him to have a great day.  (Don’t tell him, I’ve noticed that, he’d deny it.)

Briley is doing good.  I was able to visit her yesterday with Derek and Heather.  They are working to getting her feedings back up but are taking it slower.  She weighed 3 Lbs and 2 oz. on Friday.  They are also working with her ventilator settings.  The respiratory therapist said they are continually pushing her to get her so they aren't using the ventilator as much and so they fine tune the ventilator settings.  You can see that she is breathing some on her own which is good as that is helping her to develop her muscle tone for when she can be finally taken of the ventilator.  She is becoming more alert when she is awake and trying to look around and so is also more active when she is awake.  She truly is a little miracle.  We have been greatly blessed and appreciate all your thoughts and prayers.
Love,
Carolyn

But I have never been in another temple district!!

I was married in the Manti Temple. I received my endowments in the Manti Temple. As a girl, I went to the Manti Temple to be baptized for the dead. My grandmother went with us to the Manti Temple. I was there when Garth recived his endowments and then when he was married. For a few short years, we were in the Provo Temple district while the Manti Temple was being refurbished but, other than that, I have always lived in the Manti Temple district. Both Price and Nephi have been in the Manti Temple district forever. (Well, since 1888.) My pioneer ancestors attended the Manti Temple.  Is it alright if I go to the Payson Temple District dragging my feet and screaming all the way?

Temple Locale
Perched atop a rising knoll, known as "Temple Hill," the magnificent Manti Utah Temple dominates the Sanpete Valley of central Utah. Located just off Highway 89, approaching travelers can glimpse the distinctive towers from miles and miles away. Thousands flock to the spacious temple grounds each summer to watch the popular Mormon Miracle Pageant.

Temple Facts
The Manti Utah Temple was the third temple built in Utah.
The Manti Utah Temple was the only temple dedicated by President Lorenzo Snow.
The Manti Utah Temple was originally named the Manti Temple.
The Manti Utah Temple was built on a rattlesnake-infested site, known as the Manti Stone Quarry. Once Brigham Young designated the site for a temple, it became known as Temple Hill. The quarry's stone, Manti oolite, is the same cream-colored stone used for the temple exterior.

On the morning of the site dedication, Brigham Young confided to Warren S. Snow that Temple Hill was the spot where Book of Mormon Prophet Moroni dedicated the land for a temple site.

Open-center spiral staircases wind up each of the 179-foot towers of the Manti Utah Temple. The dramatic stairways are an engineering marvel of the Mormon pioneers.

A large arching tunnel under the east tower of the Manti Utah Temple, which has since been closed, allowed cars to pass from one side of the temple to the other.

The Manti Utah Temple features beautiful hand-painted murals on the walls of its progressive-style ordinance rooms: Creation Room, Garden Room, World Room, Terrestrial Room (no murals), and Celestial Room (no murals).

The Manti Utah Temple is one of only seven temples where patrons progress through four ordinance rooms before passing into the Celestial Room. (The other six temples are the Salt Lake Temple, the Laie Hawaii Temple, the Cardston Alberta Temple, the Idaho Falls Idaho Temple, the Los Angeles California Temple, and the Nauvoo Illinois Temple.)

The Manti Utah Temple is one of two temples that still employs live acting for presentation of the endowment. (The other is the Salt Lake Temple.)

AnnMarie: You'll have a couple years to adjust to the idea before it is a reality. Amy and Eric will have the best commute of anyone I know.

Kirsten: Besides, if you just CAN't adjust, there's always that in-law apartment at Jim and Julie's, right guys?! :) How exciting!  Our little Payson is growing up!  It almost makes me want to move closer!  You guys are all so lucky!  Temples in every direction!
Kirsten

Manti Temple needs better attendance. I wonder how they keep it a full-service temple as it is. The folks from Delta and Price are great temple-attenders but they live two to three hours away. They should be moved into a closer temple district, I think. Then what? There are not enough people in Sanpete County to keep a temple going. Well, not right now. The way they are growing, there might be soon. We are busy in the evenings and on Friday and Saturdays. The other days are pretty slow with about eight or ten on a session with but a few exceptions. Sometimes a ward or stake will show up and that is really helpful.

Gordon Smith sent a link to "Born without eyes."

This young man was born without eyes.  He is amazing.  What great talent he has.  He also has a very devoted father and mother.

Joyce Staley Re: Temple

We will still go to Manti, I think.  We haven't been told any different.

It is good to hear from you.  I can't get onto facebook from either of my computers so I haven't responded to you.  Sorry! :>)

Hope you are doing great.  Vic is having a really rough time.  About a month ago they finally decided that he had gout (after about 4-5 months of not knowing).  He has been in a lot of pain.  They gave him some new medication to try and it was doing really good until last weekend and then he said it is just like it was before he started the med's.

Our dd and her twins are still living with us.  Mom is going to school full time (a thing which her ex wouldn't allow her to do) and working full time.  My 83 yo mother and 85 yo father tend them while I am at work.  I get them ready in the am and pick them up in the pm and have the full responsibility of them.  Mom leaves at 7:30 am and gets home 11:00 pm so it is kind of hard on her but it will be good in the end.

Well,I better get to work.  Thanks for writing.

News of Briley‏

Helen wrote: Dearest folks: thanks for the special Sunday afternoon/evening. Have a good week. Love Helen

Hi everyone,
I hope your New Year is going great.
Briley is doing well and is stable.  Over the weekend they had increased her feedings through the feeding tube in her nose and so they were able to remove the IV nutrient feeding she has been getting and also the IV for her sedation medicine.  On Sunday she was in distress.  Her stomach had become enlarged and she had started to throw up.  They suctioned out the milk and a lot of air in her stomach and decided maybe the sedation medication was giving her problems in her stomach and so they had to put both the sedation and nutrition IV's back in.  This also affected her lungs some and so they've been adjusting the ventilator settings.  She is stable though and doing well.  Derek and Heather are now able to see her by web came via the internet when they are not down there to see her.  She really is growing and I can't believe how long and thick her hair is becoming.  It's hard to believe she is 5 1/2 weeks old already.  She truly is amazing and such a little fighter.  Thanks for thinking of us.  We really appreciate it and Derek and Heather are grateful for all that is being done for them.  Heavenly Father is truly watching out for them and blessing them in so many ways.
Take care and have a great week.

Payson Temple Announced

LDS Church to build temple in Payson
Mormons in southern Utah County no longer will have to travel north to Provo or south to Manti to participate in their faith's most sacred rituals.
The LDS Church announced Monday it is building a temple in Payson, the 15th in Utah and the third in Utah County.
The new temple will help "meet the needs of a growing church membership in the area," LDS President Thomas S. Monson said in a statement, "and will ease the heavy use of the Provo temple, which is one of the busiest in the church."
Although artist renderings and construction dates are still to come, LDS officials announced the temple's location: a gentle slope at 930 West and 1550 South, a mile away from the 800 South exit on Interstate 15. The property boasts scenic views of the area as well as easy access to the freeway.
"I am thrilled to hear the news," said Robert Provstgaard, an LDS bishop in Payson who grew up playing in the very field chosen for the temple. "Payson is absolutely fitted for a temple."
About four months ago, he and other Utah County bishops were told the Provo temple had reached capacity. At peak times, people were waiting several hours to go through a ceremony.
The Payson temple -- the 152nd in operation or planned worldwide for the LDS Church -- will serve more than 20 Mormon stakes from Spanish Fork to Nephi, comprising roughly 78,000 Latter-day Saints.
"It's a big honor to have a temple put in your town," Payson Mayor Rick Moore said. "We're looking forward to working with the church and doing everything we can to facilitate what they need."
The freshman mayor, who is LDS, said the temple is sure to spark economic development but added, "if that's the only reason you're wanting a temple, then you've got problems."
Mormons consider temples sacred places, where they make promises and commitments to God. It also is where couples go to be married and "sealed" to one another for eternity.
City Councilman Brad Daley said the temple will shine a "spotlight" on Payson, a city of 17,500 people. He expects more homes to sprout in the rural area surrounding the temple site, which is zoned residential.
"A lot of developers like to build in and around the temple developments," Daley said. The homes, he noted, often are more marketable because of their proximity to the temple and their reputation as part of a "quiet community."
The only "negative" Daley anticipates is increased traffic, but he expects the city can handle it.
Rodney Mayo, an LDS bishop in Payson who works at Brigham Young University, considers the new temple a spiritual boon.
"Having a new temple always helps lift our spirituality and [church] activity level," he said. "We are blessed to live in a region where temples are so accessible."
Utah County already boasts two temples to the north -- in American Fork and Provo.
Last fall, the LDS Church announced plans to build a temple on Main Street in Brigham City in Box Elder County.

From Eva Dixon:
Hi,  This will be so wonderful for you as far a travel at night and early morning.  I imagine you will get to work there.  In SL , I know, they transferred many of our workers to Bountiful because they were already trained.  I was on my mission when Bountiful was dedicated.  It is hard to change from our Temple, but, I am so grateful now that I can't walk as far and can get to here easily iin 10-15 minutes.  The Lord does know what He is doing.   I am so grateful for the fantastic blessings that have come into my life in the past few weeks.  Love you, Eva
